MN Soccer Tourney Resumes After Heat Suspension

BLAINE, Minn. (AP) -- The Schwan's USA Cup youth soccer tournament suspended play for three hours due to the steamy heat Sunday afternoon.

Tournament officials at the National Sports Center in the Twin Cities suburb of Blaine say the suspension took effect with games that were due to start at 1 p.m. Schwan's USA Cup spokesman Barclay Kruse says play resumed at 4 p.m.

The National Weather Service says it was 91 degrees in Blaine at 1 p.m. with a heat index of 110.

Kruse says the safety of players, fans, volunteers and staff is paramount, and tournament officials wanted to avoid any problems before they develop. He says there were no reports of anyone falling ill from the heat.

The tournament began Friday and runs through Saturday, but no games are scheduled for Monday. It has drawn more than 900 teams from 20 states and 17 countries.
