Man Charged With Assault For Setting Teen On Fire

ST. PAUL (WCCO) — A 54-year-old man is charged with first-degree assault, after being accused of dousing his girlfriend’s son with lighter fluid and setting him on fire.

Curtis Reed, of St. Paul, will make his first court appearance Friday. According to the criminal complaint, Reed sprayed the lighter fluid on 19-year-old Antoine Willis’ head as he slept on a couch and set him on fire.

The complaint states Willis told police he “woke up on fire.” Willis then tried to flee, while on fire, but Reed allegedly chased him, continuing to spray more lighter fluid on the teen.

When officers arrived around 7 a.m. Wednesday to the residence on the 1300 block of Ames Avenue, they found Willis suffering from severe burns to his head, face, neck, hands and torso.

Willis was transported to Regions Hospital where he is being treated for severe burns. Doctors say he is expected to have permanent injuries.

“This is an unspeakably horrific assault that caused the victim great bodily harm. Our office will prosecute this case vigorously,” County Attorney John Choi said.

    F*CKING RIDICULOUS.

    1st degree assault??

Um…shouldn’t that be 1st degree attempted murder?????

  2. Jay says:

How fricking ridiculous is this! I cant believe I read that right. I would have guessed attempted murder, not assault. They just gave this SOB a free ticket to do it again to some poor unsuspecting victim, possibly of his next girl friend! The laws and their stupid qualifiers are totally out of whack!!

I agree he should be behind bars for life if he thinks it’s ok to set someone on fire.

I want to thank you all for proving what a backwards racist hateful state Minnesota truly is. Anyone doubting such allegations need only refer to the comments on this page.

You are very welcome. Hope we can continue to help educate the blind and keep you this happy well into the future. Oh, and if you don’t like it, move to some other state – we’re hoping you do.

  8. Silliness says:

@Ann this is the same state that furiously called in to say the Valleyfair attack on the father defending his daughter was a hate crime (racially motivated) only to be surprised the victim was Black himself. Lol. Seriously people, how can anyone think that this crime is defensible to the point of assuming the first degree assault charge must be because of historical oppression? And this is only within the first couple of comments. Thinking caps folks. *smh* i swear we got loudmouth dummies in every race.

Stupidity aside, i really hope that young boy can find a way to recover, both physically and mentally. What in the hell could be the motivation for something like that? Sure could use some details. So messed up.
