'U Of M' Cancels CLA Winter Commencement Ceremony
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There is some bad news for the mid-year liberal arts graduates at the University of Minnesota. The school announced that it is canceling commencement ceremonies in December this year.
In a letter sent to students, Dean James Parente wrote, "Although this may be disappointing for many, the closure of Northrop Memorial Auditorium leaves no viable campus location."
Northrop Auditorium is traditionally where commencement is celebrated, but the building closed its doors for renovations in February, and isn't expected to open again until the summer of 2013.
Fall graduates are invited to a "Senior Celebration reception" on Dec. 15. They could also come back for the spring 2012 commencement held in Mariucci Arena in May 2012.
