Toddler Found Underwater After Man Has Medical Situation

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An 18-month-old child is in the intensive care unit at a Duluth hospital after the child was found under water following a "medical event" that happened to the child's grandfather, authorities said.

Virginia Police and the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a water incident at 10:58 a.m. Friday in Morse Township.

When authorities arrived, they learned that the child was playing with his grandfather in water when the grandfather suffered a "medical event." The man lost consciousness, and when he regained consciousness, he found the toddler lying face down in the water, authorities said.

Medical personnel initiated CPR and the toddler was transported to an Ely hospital before being airlifted to Duluth. The toddler is still in intensive care.
