Driver Dies After Car Goes Airborne, Lands In Trees

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A driver is dead after a vehicle went airborne, landed in some trees and caught on fire Sunday.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's Office responded to the one-car crash around 4 p.m. Sunday on 140th Avenue, near Highway 63 in the town of Emerald.

Police say a 1998 Dodge Stratus was driving west on 140th Avenue when the vehicle entered the ditch, struck a culvert and went airborne hitting the top of a tree. The vehicle came to rest among some trees but then caught on fire, according to police.

Three citizens attempted to pull the victim from the vehicle and put the fire out with a fire extinguisher but the flames were too intense.
