Governor's Deer Opener Set For Biwabik In NE Minn.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Gov. Mark Dayton is continuing the tradition of the Minnesota Governor's Deer Hunting Opener started by his predecessor, Tim Pawlenty.

Dayton said Monday the 2011 Governor's Deer Opener will be held Nov. 4-5 in Biwabik, in northeastern Minnesota.

Pawlenty began the annual event in 2003 as a way to showcase Minnesota's tradition of deer hunting. The Governor's Deer Opener is held at a different location around the state each year. This is the first time it will be held in Biwabik, on Minnesota's Iron Range.

Minnesota has nearly a half-million deer hunters. The event is coordinated by the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Explore Minnesota Tourism.
