Ground Turkey Linked To Salmonella Outbreak

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota is one several states where people have gotten sick due to a salmonella outbreak that appears to be linked to eating ground turkey.

The Centers for Disease Control said one person has died and 76 people have gotten sick.

The government has not said who produced the ground turkey meat and has not issued a recall.

The agriculture department sent out an alert about the illnesses last week. They also urged people to properly cook their meat, which can decrease the chances of salmonella poisoning.

At least one person in Minnesota had an illness linked to the outbreak. Minnesota Health Department spokesman Doug Schultz said a 70-year-old woman from Carver County was hospitalized and survived the illness that came on in late March.

The highest numbers of people sick are in Michigan and Ohio.

Food safety advocates are pushing for a recall.
