Family Holds ‘Strong Will’ Fundraiser For Boy With Cancer

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — No six-year-old should have to fight cancer.

Will Newell, known to his family as ‘Strong Will’, was diagnosed with a rare form of sinus cancer six months ago.

“Only two kids in the United States before Will have been diagnosed,” said Janel Newell, Will’s mom.

Will has gone through chemotherapy, multiple surgeries and has had part of his jaw removed during treatment. Will’s next step is a procedure in Boston.

To help pay for the procedure, Will’s friends and family gathered at the Minneapolis Eagles 34 Saturday for a fundraiser.

They raised about $10,000 for Will’s expenses.

“I wish that the circumstances were different, but it’s really touching,” says Mike Newell, Will’s father.

If you would like to donate to Will’s procedure, a fund has been set up at the address below:

Does anyone know how I can contact the family? My son went through proton treatment in Boston as well. There is an organization that provides funds specifically for out of pocket expenses for travel/meals/lodging for people getting proton therapy. We were given $2,000. The organization is called Procure. The website is Please contact me if you need help/have questions. The people in Boston are magical, by the way….
