Former Gopher QB Now Head Coach For Park Center

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (WCCO) -- The name Rickey Foggie is synonymous with helping boost the Gopher football program in the mid-80s under the direction of Lou Holtz.

Foggie was the one-time, fleet-footed option quarterback, converted from defensive back by Holtz. At that position, Foggie flourished.

"He taught me a lot, he taught me a lot about how to play the game of football, how to approach the game, how to be prepared both mentally and physically," he said.

Foggie is starting a new chapter in his football life. After spending some time as an assistant coach in the arena football league, he's now the head coach at Park Center High School.

His challenge is a little like his college days: get kids to come out and get them to believe.

"That's the biggest thing. You know, we've been working with our youth association throughout the summer, letting them know that we're setting a new program here at Park Center," said Foggie.

His kids did not see him play for the Gophers but in this day and age, they knew who he was.

"After I heard he was going to be the head coach, I did some research ... YouTube and Google," said Preston Paulsen, Park Center's quarterback.

So Foggie is ready to move the team up the ladder and make this like it was for him in college -- a fun place to be.

"It's gonna be fun, kids going to work hard for us and we're going to make a change," he said.
