Police Investigate Fatal Stabbing In South Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police are trying to figure out why two men were attacked late Friday night. One of them died.

It was shortly after 7 p.m. Friday when the crowd gathered near 38th and Chicago Avenue South became witnesses to a fatal stabbing.

"Somebody got out the car got into an altercation and he just started stabbing people," said Georgio Wright.

According the Minneapolis Police, the knife-wielding suspect stabbed two men. One of the victims was identified by friends as 22-year-old Justin Jackson.

"I saw him step from over top of him and I seen him back up off of him and then he tried to run," said Wright.

Police said the man with the knife did not get far. He was stopped by the crowd of people and beaten severely. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center along with another man who was stabbed.

Authorities said they believe the man beaten by the crowd could be the person responsible for taking Jackson's life.

"I just know he will truly be missed," said Wright. Georgio Wright said he grew up with Jackson.

"He was always smiling, always fun, always joking, I loved him, he's like my brother," Wright said.

Wright said Jackson had a kind soul and loved to make people laugh.

V.J. Smith with Mad Dads said Jackson's death has split this neighborhood right down the middle.

"Right now there is some tension in the neighborhood so we have to try and figure out how to resolve the tension and how to get the neighborhood to come back together," said Smith.

Smith said he hopes time spent with his friends and family will calm the masses, allowing police to work and find out the reason why a young man lost his life.

The condition of the two men recovering at HCMC is not known at this time. Police are looking for the public's help in solving this crime. If you have any information about the incident, call Minneapolis Police at (612) 692-8477.
