Libyans In Twin Cities Celebrate End Of Gadhafi's Rule

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Inside the Marina Grill and Deli in Northeast Minneapolis, a television blared news from Libya, where rebels have claimed to be in control of most of the Libyan capital on Monday after their advance on Tripoli.

"Muammar Gadhafi is an old man and he should leave because he has been head of the government for a long long time," said Fauzi Amed, who is Egyptian but said he stands behind his Libyan friends, having gone through it themselves.

The actions of rebels has heralded the fall of Qaddafi's nearly 42-year regime of power.

"You know I think it's about time," said Ali Giarushi, originally from Libya but now living in the Twin Cities.

On Monday, Giarushi was taking his friend, a heart surgeon going back to Libya to help now that Gadhafi's rule is ending.

"After 40 years of suffering I think it's excellent. It's a good day for Libya," he said.

Giarushi said for the past 40 years, Gadhafi has been taking all of the country's resources for himself and his family and using the money for terrorist activity. Now, he said, the future is bright.

"That's what we are looking for -- freedom and democracy," he said.
