Twins Prospect Gibson To Continue Elbow Rehab

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Twins general manager Bill Smith says top pitching prospect Kyle Gibson will continue rehabbing his injured elbow after meeting with a specialist in New York.

Gibson met with Dr. David Altcheck for an examination on Monday. Altcheck performed Tommy John surgery on Twins closer Joe Nathan and has done the procedure on numerous other pitchers.

Gibson isn’t going to have the surgery yet. He has a strained muscle in his elbow and a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. The Twins’ medical staff initially recommended trying to fix the injury through rehabilitation and not surgery, which would keep him out all of next season.

Smith says Altcheck supported that recommendation after the examination. Gibson will continue his rehab program in Florida and will be re-evaluated after the initial phase.
