Charges: Man Took Deposits From Resort Vacationers
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A man is charged with knowingly collecting and cashing checks for reservations for a foreclosed Cass Lake resort.
Christopher Dunker, the man who claimed to be managing the Big Wolf Lake Resort, is charged with theft.
He was arrested Tuesday night, according to the Hubbard County Sheriff's Department.
Police said Dunker, 29, allegedly told people planning vacations that they would get a discount if they sent in the whole amount for their reservation in advance. Instead, the victims claim they paid the money only to find out the resort was closed before getting there.
According to the criminal complaint, the Hubbard County Sheriff's Department has taken reports from 11 different individuals or groups claiming Dunker took payments from them in the spring of 2011. Officers said the total amount reported taken is $16,973.
The property, located in the middle of Lakes Country in Cass County, has been closed all summer and the Hubbard County Attorney's Office said the bank currently owns the resort.
Most of the victims said they found the Big Wolf Lake Resort online. The web site is still up today, but the phone number listed has been disconnected.
