Minnesota Tops In Elderly Care

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's the first of its kind report and it finds that Minnesota leads the nation in the way it cares for its elderly.

The report praises Minnesota for having a system allowing 60 percent of its long-term care patients to stay in their homes. In many states that figure is around 40 percent.

But Michelle Kimball of the Minnesota chapter of AARP says there's always room for improvement.

"When we have surveys that show that 97 percent of Minnesotans prefer to stay in their homes in the community -- but only 60 percent are able to do that -- we can do better," she said.

AARP and two other agencies issued the study, which says 200,000 people could be kept out of nursing homes if the rest of the country followed the Minnesota model.

The report credited the close coordination of care providers and other entities in providing the best long-term care in the country.
