Prep Blog: Week 2 Top Performances

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Week 2 in high school football featured plenty of great match-ups and close calls, especially for this early in the season.

Hill-Murray got out to a big lead over Henry Sibley, then had to hang on for a slim victory. Blaine used four rushing touchdowns from its quarterback, including the game-winner in overtime, to slip past Hopkins 26-20. And there was even a little controversy as Shakopee took on Chanhassen in the Missota Conference. Alexi Johnson had a potential game-winning kick blocked for Shakopee, but the down was replayed after officials determined the ball wasn't properly set. Johnson then made a 23-yard field goal with 10 seconds left to seal a Sabers victory.

There were several other outstanding performances from Friday night's action. Here are our Top 4 Performances:

Sura leads South St. Paul Over Rivals

Sam Sura just kept running for the South St. Paul Packers Friday night as they took on their rivals, the North St. Paul Polars in Classic Suburban Conference play Friday night. Sura had 16 carries for 195 yards and four touchdowns as the Packers routed North St. Paul 51-0 to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Packers are currently ranked No. 4 in Class 4A.

Washburn Sophomore Leads Millers To Victory

Jeffrey Jones burst onto the scene as a freshman running back for the Minneapolis Washburn Millers last year. Friday, he picked up right where he left off as the Millers pounded South in Minneapolis City Conference play. Jones dominated with three touchdowns as Washburn defeated South 45-6. The Millers, already off to a 2-0 start, are the favorites to win the Minneapolis City Conference.

Hutchinson QB Leads Tigers To Comeback Victory

Junior quarterback McKinley Anderson might have had a little trouble getting to sleep Friday night. That's because he probably had the adrenaline flowing late in the night after Hutchinson made an improbable comeback victory over Annandale in Wright County Conference action. Annandale had a 28-0 lead, but Anderson's 40-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Peterson late in the fourth quarter tied the game 28-28. Anderson also scored from five yards out in overtime to lead the Tigers to a 35-28 win.

Lakeville North Senior Has Big Night In Victory

Lakeville North senior Trey Heid accounted for 20 of his team's 45 points in a 45-19 win over Apple Valley Friday night in South Suburban Conference Play. Heid completed 16 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Heid also kicked a pair of field goals in the Panthers victory. Lakeville North, ranked No. 7 in Class 5A, is off to a 2-0 start.
