Does Cooler Weather Mean Relief From Allergies?

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- While it seems like this has been a terrible year for allergies, a local allergy specialist said it's just par for the course.

Dr. Richard Bransford, who works with Allergy Asthma Specialists, said we are past the peak of ragweed, which hit the highest pollen levels around Labor Day.

Even though the cool weather has made its presence known, he said one day of frost won't kill ragweed. Several days of frost in a row are needed -- if not weeks -- to stop the pesky plant from pollinating.

He said once the snow starts falling, it will stop the spread of molds so those who are allergic to mold can only hope for winter for relief.

Bransford said this year's bout of allergies is no different from any other year.

Those who suffer from allergies should keep their windows closed, turn on their air conditioning and take antihistamines like Zyrtec and Allegra.

If that doesn't work, contact a doctor.
