Bars Stage Unofficial St. Cloud State Homecoming

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) -- St. Cloud State University has canceled its homecoming festivities, but that hasn't stopped a group of downtown bars from staging an unofficial homecoming celebration.

St. Cloud Hospitality Association president Dan Wedin says about 15 to 20 businesses will host the traditional breakfast and drink specials on Saturday, Oct. 8. The St. Cloud Huskies will host Minnesota State-Mankato at 1 p.m.

Earlier this year St. Cloud State got rid of the traditional Homecoming event, and replaced it with a series of four "Celebrate! St. Cloud State" events. President Earl Potter has called the old homecoming a tradition the university was not proud of, including a full day of drinking known as "kegs and eggs." WJON says the first Celebrate! St. Cloud State event is scheduled for Oct. 1.
