Special Playground Planned For Kids With Disabilies

WOODBURY, Minn. (WCCO) -- A playground like no other in the Twin Cities will soon be built in Woodbury if the group behind it raises enough money.

The Madison Claire Foundation is hoping to raise money for the playground, but not to give it all the fancy bells and whistles, just to make it entirely accessible to children with disabilities.

The Foundation is dedicated to helping children diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and other life threatening illnesses and disabilities.

The group found a site for the playground off Radio Drive in Woodbury on the grounds of the Bielenberg Sports Complex.

It will be full of features that allow kids who use wheelchairs, walkers and those with developmental disabilities to play freely.

Finding a playground suitable for them is a tough task for many families with kids with disabilities,

"It's estimated that one in 10 children have some sort of disability that excludes them from either the physical or social play at traditional playgrounds. A lot of those are barriers -- wood chips, sand, rocks, lack of ramps," said Dana Millington, from the Madison Claire Foundation.

Their goal is to raise $600,000 for the playground that will be called Madison's Place.

Members of the Minnesota Air National Guard have already agreed to donate the labor, but materials and a contractor are still needed.

A fundraising event will be held on Saturday. There will be a 1920s theme and be held at the Van Dusen Mansion in Minneapolis. Tickets are $75 per person or $150 per couple.
