Sheriff: Man Killed By Deputy Did Not Have Gun

MINNESOTA CITY, Minn. (AP) — The sheriff of Winona County says the man fatally shot by a deputy last week did not have a gun.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says officers began searching for Chase Kolstad after getting reports that he was armed and suicidal. The BCA says officers found him on a bridge in Minnesota City Sept. 14 where a sheriff’s deputy shot and killed Kolstad after he pointed a weapon at responding officers.

In a letter to the Winona Daily News, Sheriff Dave Brand declined to provide any more specifics about the shooting, but urged the public to keep an open mind until the investigation is complete.

Police are little more than criminals themselves. They have the same mentality and god complexes as criminals. This officer should go to jail but he will get suspended and continue to work becuase Judges and Cops protect their own.

    • Jim

Calling all police officers “little more than criminals” because of the actions of a few is 100%, stone-cold stupid.

      • markH

Now that was an unnecessary statement. If you want to debate with someone, engage them on the merits of the issue-not personal attacks. Peace.

        • Jim

I attacked the message, not the messenger. Terry’s message is stupid. Period. Why defend that kind of garbage?

          • bucky

if your calling the man who died garbage your nothing but a dumb punk he was a friend and your and ass for calling him garbage

    • TL

naaaaa…their just tired of dealing with idiots such as yourself who doesnt have much intelligence in thier statements…so they go out and shoot someone.

  • Jay

The police went by the information the caller gave them. This caller described the individual as “armed and suicidal” to the dispatcher. What do you think law enforcement should do? Wouldnt you think theydf be prepared to defend themselves just in case? The caller made the mistake of reporting information that actually caused this mans death. Know your facts before you make the call, it may save someone else life.

    • todd

If I make the same mistake, do I get a pass or do I get charged? I bey if I had a badge I would not but not the other way around. I am sure that the sherrifs dept will be issuing a pass after they complete their “impartial investigation”.

      • @Todd

Todd why would you be on the bridge holding a gun and shooting a civilian, sometimes its better to keep your opinion to yourself, got it tree stump

  • Lol

Sounds like the suicidal man probably made a move that looked as though he was turning to shoot at the police.

  • johnny 5

if the cops cant handle a armed in suicidal person without killing them then what the hell was the point them being a cop? this isnt Judge Dredd, cops Do Not have the right to be a executioner or decide who lives or die.
If a average person shot & killed someone because they “thought” that person had a weapon but didnt then the shooter would get a felonie & prison time, this cop made a mistake & f’d up & someone died, he shouldnt be a cop anymore, plain in simple, I dont want this dude on the streets trying to protect me or my family, he has no shooting discipline!

    • Morgan

      Felonie, love it.

    • Ben Dover

Johnny 5 is sofa king stupid

  • Ellen

I suppose y’all think an officer should wait until the person fires at him first?
Give him a sporting chance etc? Stupid people. Police officers have a desire
to live just like anyone else. They have to make split second decisions when
confronted with a situation like this. My thoughts? If someone is suicidal,
let them jump or whatever. He may have ditched the gun already, or it could
have fallen into the river. He wanted to be dead, now he is.

    • Do not fire until fired upon

Isn’t that the rule – do not fire at someone until fired upon? There is a reason for that rule – and apparently he wasn’t fired upon.

      • Mark

From talking to my coworker the actual training is empty your clip if you think your life is endangered. I thought he was joking. Apparently he had information it is actually true. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I guess it is true that when the accidental shootings occur they are accidental, 1 bullet is an accident, 15 is standard procedure.

        • TL

not sure what jurisdiction your friend undertook his/her training but I can assure you….that is not how a cop is trained.

      • Tom D.

My understanding is that officers can use deadly force if they are in imminent danger. So let’s see how you would do…you get a call about an armed and dangerous person, proceed to the scene and probably have seconds to determine the threat level to your own safety and determine your actions based on your training. You may have less than a ‘blink-of-an-eye’s’ amount of time to do this and you have been told the person is armed.
These officers have a very tough job. How many here go to work every morning knowing they have a very good chance of never coming home again. Do not judge their actions as they do their best to protect and serve the public…unless you are willing and able to jump into their shoes the next time a call comes across their radio.

      • dah-der-dolt

“Rule” um is their an official rule book on this, most of you gutless cowards have no idea what it would be like to have a gun pointed at you, yet you expect the officer to be shot at 1st, find a speeding bus and triip in front of it.

  • AntiTeabagger

It is their job to determine if he was a threat or not. Plain and simple, the cop already had in his head that he was armed and therefor became trigger happy.

    • sad

Here is another idiot. So crazy the amount of dumb people there are like this one!

      • AntiTeabagger

You my friend are the kool-aid drinker, either that or another dumb cop who thinks he is above the law.

  • rml

Way too many cops pulling out guns these days, there are other ways to deal with these instances without resorting to shoot to kill. Maybe some more training for some of these out of control cops.

    • fred

anything worth shooting is worth killing…..just sayin

    • Wake up already

Whatever, you misinformed dork. Shoot those worthless bast@rds and let’s do our part of removing the overflowing numbers of illegitimate garbage running through our society…

      • Mark

Exactly, if anyone calls the police on you they should show up immediately and shoot you without verifying the veracity of the claim. Anyone who dies to a bullet isn’t fit to live in our society I say.

    • TL

Im thinking more training for certain members of the public who dont have a clue about how to handle any situation and then questions negatively the manner in which a cop that is traiined to handle any situation.

Should your home be burglarized…dont call 911…cops will come with guns drawn. Andy Taylor only works in Mayberry but I believe hes retired by now.

    • GH

Police are not trained to injure. You all get on here and like to talk about how the cops should do their jobs, but I don’t see you out there putting your lives on the line everyday. It makes me sick that you people are the same idiots that call 911 for help. How about you back off…you don’t know the entire situation!! You only know what libowcco tells you.

Isn’t it nice that we all get to sit back and take the time to pass judgement. There is a lot more that we don’t know. Was it dark? Did the person act as though they had a weapon? Was the officer experienced enough to handle this situation? Again, it is nice that we get to sit back and take the time to pass judgement. Do you think either party was able to do that or do you suppose spilt second decisions had to be made. A police officer walks up to cars everyday. Everytime , putting his or her life at risk to protect our homes and property. You may not like them because you have crossed paths with them in the past. Most likely because you were doing something wrong. Someone has to do it , and obviously it is not you. Why not?

    • AntiTeabagger

Bottom line, he has no reason to shoot the guy no matter what. They have tazers now for that. DUH.

  • common sense

You get yourself into trouble – you are asking for trouble.

    • AntiTeabagger

How did he get himself in trouble? Someone else called and said he was suicidal, how does that make any sense, you my friend, are a moron

  • Mike Hawk

I’m so sick of people saying how cops put their lives ON THE LINE everyday.
Whatever, they have B.P. vests & guns & dogs & parners & radios & rap sheets.
Sounds as if they should be able to deal with one guy on a bridge WITH NO GUN. Couldn’t wait for some BACKUP????

  • zee the reporter

    another murder by a cop!

  • Honestly

Cops killing innocent people have nothing to do with training. This is the excuse they use when police abuse their power. Mark Fuhrman said ” cops are like GODs we can do anything we want”. That’s the only l thing that racist cave n!@@er ex cop said that was truthful.

  • To quick to judge

I find it sad that the majority of those who wrote comments are so quick to judge when we dont know the facts and all we can do is assume. The only things we do know is that a young man is dead and his friends and family will never seem him again. We also know that he died at the hands of a cop same with Oscar Grant, Kelly Thomas, Douglas Zerby and the list goes on. So i ask you this when does it stop when will they ever be held responsible. The facts are the facts

  • KIller

what happened to rubber bullets? they create more pain and distraction than the actual bullet….with no deadly results. Cops can do a better job of helping someone period. A good majority enjoy their power trip and are trigger happy, period. He will have to deal with his conscience now and that will be his punishment. Keep this killer out of the street now. I hope he can play the killing scene over and over til he blows his head out! KIller!
