Recipe: Mama V’s Spice Bars

WCCO’s Frank Vascellaro and his mom went over her famous spice bar recipe on the WCCO Saturday Morning show. The recipe is below.

Mama V’s Spice Bars


Flour, 1 and ¾ cups
Raisins, 1 cup
Water, 1 cup
Vegetable Oil, ½ cup
Sugar, 1 cup
Egg, 1
Salt, ¼ teaspoon
Baking Soda, 1 teaspoon
Allspice, 1 teaspoon
Nutmeg, 1 teaspoon
Clove ½ teaspoon
Cinnamon, 1 teaspoon
Walnuts, ¾ cup

Mix the raisins and water in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let cool. Add the oil and sugar to the raisin water, stir. Lightly beat one egg in bowl. Add the raisin water mixture to the bowl containing the beaten egg.

Add flour; add salt, add baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, and nuts (Unless you don’t like nuts)

Spray a 9 x 12 baking dish with Pam, pour batter and even out batter in dish. Bake for 20 minutes at 375 degrees. Remove, and let bars cool. When cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar, cut and serve. Enjoy.
