Semi Overturns On I-35W, Spills 80,000-Lbs Food

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A semi truck carrying 80,000 pounds of food overturned on Interstate 35W Monday morning, closing the road while crews clean up.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes near downtown Minneapolis.

According to MnDOT, the semi was heading through the commons with Interstate 94 when it flipped.

No one was injured, but 80,000 pounds of food spilled over the road.

I-35W south was closed at Portland Ave. while crews cleaned up. They needed to offload all the food before the truck can be tipped back up and taken off the road.

The interstate reopened at around 4 p.m.

actually, 35W South is closed at Hiawatha as that is the last exit before the curves

  • Todd

The truck and cargo probably weighs a total of 80,000 pounds. If just the food weighs 80,000 pounds then this guy was WAY overweight.

What a nightmare… I wonder what caused it to flip? Maybe Todd was right and it was way overloaded to the point it was top heavy…

    • Jon Lindquist

the driver went too fast on the sharp curve rated at 35MPH, and even a car can only go at MOST 50MPH on the curve in perfect weather conditions with good tires. large trucks have a top-heavy weight distribution when loaded and thus are easier to flip over.

      • Dan from L.A.

62 mph is as fast as I will take that curve, on dry pavement.

Harry Chapin did a song about a truck overturning with 80,000 pounds of bananas

  • Kirk Allen Larson

Odds are its near 80k lbs with truck, trailer and cargo combined. Unless the driver just came straight from the 35 split AND MNDOT just so happened to have the mobile weight station setup, there is no way to tell what the true weight is.

Odds are the guy was in a rush and pushed his luck.

    • Jon Lindquist

actually, the weight is likely what was listed on the paperwork that was either pulled from the truck or brought to the scene by a company manager

    What kind of food

When it was all over, the troopers sure were laughing at this one.
