CenterPoint: Crews Addressing Natural Gas Smell In N. Metro

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The north Metro may smell a lot like natural gas Friday evening, CenterPoint Energy says.

CenterPoint Energy said crews working to reactivate a natural gas pipeline that had an operational issue, releasing a high concentration of odorant into the distribution system. That odorant is what you smell when there is a natural gas leak. The cities that will likely smell the extra odorant are: Brooklyn Center, Fridley, Minneapolis, Maple Grove and Plymouth.

CenterPoint Energy said technicians have corrected the problem and that the smell should dissipate with the evening. Officials with CenterPointe said they have received more than 600 calls on the smell and have put about 200 technicians on the issue.

The company also said that the scent may or may not indicate a natural gas leak. If you smell gas, CenterPoint says to call 1-800-296-9815 to report it immediately. You are urged to be patient as they are being flooded with phone calls because of the issue.
