Prep Blog: Week 5 Top Performances

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Week 5 in high school football brought us some big match-ups and some equally as big individual performances.

Conference races are taking shape in most of the leagues around the Twin Cities metro area, and now teams are focused on finishing the regular season strong and going into the section playoffs with confidence.

The fifth week of the regular season brought us a little bit of everything, but we could only choose four performances that stood out to us. Here they are:

St. Francis RB leads Saints Over Fridley

Senior running back Jake Engnell had 39 carries for 241 yards and three touchdowns as the Fighting Saints beat Fridley 31-12 in North Suburban Conference play. For as many yards as he ran for, all three of his touchdown runs went for a combined nine yards. He scored on runs of 2, 3 and 4 yards. The Saints improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference, just a game behind Totino-Grace. The Saints host North Branch next week.

Kaiser Runs Prior Lake Past Burnsville

Senior running back Jack Kaiser had a huge game as Prior Lake defeated Bloomington Kennedy 30-13 in the South Suburban Conference. Kaiser had 26 carries for 296 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Lakers to the victory. He scored three consecutive touchdowns at one point on four consecutive plays on runs that went for 39, 59 and 51 yards. Prior Lake might be the sleeper in this conference with a 3-1 mark behind Lakeville South and Lakeville North, who are both undefeated.

Breck QB Throws All Over St. Paul Academy In Victory

Breck senior quarterback Austin Lommen is quietly making a name for himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the Twin Cities metro area. But the secret is out now. Lommen passed for 274 yards and five touchdowns as Breck beat St. Paul Academy 48-14 in the Tri-Metro Conference. Lommen now has 19 touchdown passes on the season. He also had just two incompletions in the victory. Three of his five scores went to Jack Schmidt on plays of 31, 38 and 17 yards. Breck hosts perennial league power DeLaSalle Friday, with the Mustangs a game behind the Islanders in the West section of the league.

Martin, Ford Lead Wayzata Past Minnetonka

Star running back Mitch Underhill is out for the season, but it's hard to tell if it's affected the Wayzata football team. The Trojans, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, got big nights from running back Antonio Ford and quarterback Nick Martin in a 35-7 win over Minnetonka, ranked No. 6 in 5A. Wayzata trailed 7-6 at the half and used a dominating second half to get the victory. Ford rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns, and Martin had two touchdown passes that were less than a minute apart to lead the Trojans to the win. Wayzata travels to Edina next Friday, while Minnetonka has a tough task at No. 1-ranked Eden Prairie.

Tune into WCCO's High School Sports Rally next Friday with Frank Vascellaro, Mike Max and John Lauritsen. They'll have all the highlights from the big games around the state. John Lauritsen will be at a great battle as St. Thomas Academy, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 4A, hosts Holy Family Catholic, the No. 2 ranked team in Class 3A.
