Record Heat, Wind, Dry Air Spark Fire Danger Concerns

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The combination of wind and dry air is making for some serious fire concerns in Minnesota Wednesday and Thursday.

WCCO Meteorologist Mike Augustyniak said a red flag warning is in effect from noon Wednesday to 7 p.m. Thursday because of the wind and low relative humidity across the state and much of the upper Midwest.

Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 86 degrees, close to the record of 87 degrees set for Oct. 5 back in 1879.

The National Weather Service said warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential.

Augustyniak said the combo between dry air and wind could mean brush fires will spark up and could spread quickly.

He warns to keep an eye on cigarette butts and, if you don't have to, don't burn anything outdoors Wednesday and Thursday.

Fire could start with just a spark, so many communities have burning bans in place. You will need to check with your community to see if you're affected.
