Faribault Man Gets 50 Months In Fatal Accident

FARIBAULT, Minn. (WCCO) – A Faribault man was sentenced to more than four years in prison in Rice County Court on Tuesday in connection with an accident that killed a 20-year-old woman.

Mitchell Bongers, 21, pleaded guilty to one felony count of criminal vehicular homicide in connection with the April 2, 2010 incident on Aug. 18. He was sentenced Tuesday to 50 months in prison.

According to court documents, Bongers was driving a car with three other people inside that morning when it overturned and ended up in the Cannon River two miles north of Faribault. One victim in the crash, 21-year-old Alexander Hruska, pulled two victims out of the car and tried to get them to safety.

One did, and the other, 20-year-old Brittney Landsverk, got swept away by the river current and went missing. Her body was recovered 87 days later.

Bongers admitted to drinking the night before the accident, which happened at 5:13 a.m. on April 2, 2010.
