Minn. Gets Less To Help People Heat Their Homes

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minnesota will receive $73 million in federal funds to help low-income Minnesotans pay their heating bills, the Minnesota Department of Commerce announced Saturday.

However, the $73 million is less than the state has received in recent years, according to Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman.

Last year, Minnesota received $152.6 million in federal funds and helped 172,053 households that applied for heating help from the Minnesota Energy Assistance Program (EAP), the Minnesota Department of Commerce said.

Still, Rothman hopes the EAP will receive additional funding.

"We will be working closely with Minnesota's congressional delegation to advocate for those additional funds," he said.

Minnesotans earning 50 percent of the median income ($43,050 for a family of four) are encouraged to apply. The funds are distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis, the Minnesota Department of Commerce said.
