Police: 1 Dead, 4 Injured After Head-On Collision

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – One person is dead and four others are injured after two vans collided head-on near Bemidji Monday afternoon, police said.

The collision happened around 12:54 p.m. on New Bass Road Northeast in Turtle River Township, which lies northeast of Bemidji, after a van driven by 45-year-old Anthony Calloway crossed the center line and began driving north in the southbound lane. Heidi Lee, 36, tried to avoid Calloway by swerving toward the shoulder, but Calloway was entirely in her lane, police said.

Authorities pronounced 47-year-old Dawn Marie Boyd, who was one of two passengers in Calloway's van, dead at the scene.

The machine known as the jaws of life was used to cut the injured passengers from the mangled vans, police said.

Emergency crews airlifted Calloway and Lee to Essentia Health in Fargo. Crews drove Calloway's other passenger, Richard Jones, and Lee's 2-year-old son to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, police said.

The collision is still under investigation.
