MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 2-year-old girl is in serious condition after falling six stories from a St. Paul apartment window Sunday evening.

Patia Cotton fell from a window at the Lewis Park Apartments, located on the 100 block of West Wayzata Street, in what police are calling an accident.

The accident happened when Cotton was playing on a couch in her bedroom with other children. Cotton jumped on the couch and was launched out a window that the couch sits near, police said.

Cotton is currently in critical condition at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare.

Katrina Boyd, a friend of Cotton’s family, said the accident was an honest mistake.

“I know it was an accident,” she said. “[Cotton’s mom] is a good mom, and I know that she wouldn’t let anything happen like this.”

Boyd said the window Cotton fell out of was large and that the screen on it was thin.

Management at the Lewis Park Apartments declined to comment on the incident.

Police said they hope this accident serves as a reminder to parents with young children to make sure there are no potential safety hazards, even a mattress or couch, near the windows in a home.

“I was crying,” Boyd said. “I got a 2-year-old, too. It could have been my 2-year-old. It could’ve been anybody’s kids.”
