Man Charged With Abandoning Boat Near Highway

HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) – A 48-year-old Inver Grove Heights man is accused of dumping his boat illegally off the side of a road because he didn't know what else to do with it, according to charges filed Wednesday in Dakota County Court.

Timothy John Arsenal was charged with one misdemeanor count of littering in connection with the incident.

According to a complaint, Dakota County deputies were called to a report of an illegal dumping on Aug. 25 in the area of 180th Street East and Highway 52 in Vermillion Township. When authorities arrived, they saw a boat in poor condition with no motor and the registration number scraped off. The boat was blocking the roadway.

Authorities were able to determine the boat's owner despite attempts to remove the registration number. An investigation revealed that even though the title never being transferred, the boat had several owners over the last six years. Arsenal was the most recent owner.

He told authorities he had been in possession of the boat but was having trouble storing it. He said he scrapped anything of value from the boat, including the motor, but didn't know what else to do with it so he dumped it on the side of the road on 180th Street near Highway 52.

Arsenal faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.
