MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 51-year-old Sartell man died on Sunday when his gun accidentally fired after he apparently fell out of his deer stand, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Dan Hyndman on Thursday.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing hunter in Beulah Township on Sunday. Authorities immediately began a search in the area and at about 10 a.m., his body was found near his deer stand.

Authorities said it appeared Hyndman had fallen out of his deer stand, causing an accidental discharge of his firearm and a fatal gunshot wound.

The incident was one of a couple hunting deaths over the weekend across Minnesota.

Safety ON until you are ready to take the shot, it’s amazing just how many hunters out there today are just plain reckless. I’m sorry for his family and friends, but this was very preventable situation.

I second that Jason . . . Although it is possible for a gun to fire from the impact of the fall even when the safety is on . . . basic safety stuff like safety on, safety harness on at all times when in tree stands, only shoot when you know everything the bullet will hit, don’t hunt and drink, etc. would prevent a lot of these accidents. All of this is taught in any hunter safety class. (And YES, I do hunt, a lot.)

    Knucklehead Jason

Did it ever occur to you that the impact from the fall discharged the gun, very possible even if the safety was ON. It’s amazing how so many people are just plain ignorant!
