Occupy Minnesota Moves To Mpls. Backyard

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- For over a month now, Occupy Wall Street protesters have been camping out in front of the Hennepin County Government Center. But on Sunday, their protests moved -- into a backyard.

Monique White hosted an Occupy Minneapolis barbeque. She's a single mother who was recently laid off due to state budget cuts and is now facing foreclosure.

"It makes me feel really good. It lets me know that people are concerned and they are happy to assist me and support me. And I'm very appreciative of that," White said.

Protest organizers said U.S. Bank won't help her modify her mortgage. About 20 to 30 protesters have set up tents outside her home in hopes the attention will bring a resolution.

"The customer's loan was sold to Freddie Mac in 2005," said Nicole Sprenger, U.S. Bancorp vice president for corporate public relations. "Once that happened, we, as the servicer, were required to follow Freddie's guidelines. Per those guidelines, the house was foreclosed on in January 2011. It is now the property of Freddie Mac."
