Man Charged In Bicyclist's Hit-And-Run Death

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Minneapolis man has been charged in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist over the weekend.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County Monday, 27-year-old Wesley Gubbin passed three other vehicles along West River Parkway near Franklin Avenue before striking a bicyclist at about 11 a.m.

The bicyclist, who family members identified as 61-year-old Thomas Malloy of Minneapolis, went flying into the air from the impact, according to witnesses.

Malloy was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Malloy was headed to the Kehilat Sar Shalom synagogue, according to the victim's brother.

"That church was a family to him. He was there … actively 4 or 5 times a week," said Malloy's nephew, Michael Buller.

Steve Endrizzi, of Kehilat Sar Shalom, said Malloy was popular among the congregation, and that his absence was noticeable Saturday night.

"We knew he wasn't there," Endrizzi said.

The criminal complaint says Gubbin's vehicle continued at a great rate of speed, fleeing the scene.

Witnesses gave police the information that led them to Gubbin, who admitted to officers that he didn't stop after the crash because he didn't know what to do, so he kept on driving.

Gubbin's girlfriend also told police that he had fled the scene.

He has been charged with first-degree criminal vehicular homicide, which carries with it a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, if Gubbin is convicted.

"I'm glad that he did turn himself in," Buller said. "I hope the best for him. This is something that I would not want to have on my conscious."

Gubbin is scheduled to make his first appearance in court on Tuesday.
