Charges: Man Assaulted 2 U.S. Marshals Service Deputies

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 26-year-old man has been indicted for allegedly ramming two vehicles driven by deputies of the United States Marshals Service.

Shawn Michael Olthoff was charged in federal court Tuesday with two counts of assault upon a federal law enforcement officer.

According to the United States Attorney's office, when the allegations took place, Olthoff was on supervised release for a prior federal offense, but had violated the terms of that release by failing to provide his true address, attend court-ordered work release and participate in substance abuse programs,

As a result of those failures, the Attorney's Office said an arrest warrant was issued and authorities attempted to arrest Olthoff in North Branch on Oct. 28, 2011. However, Olthoff allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle driven by his girlfriend.

In the following pursuit, Olthoff's girlfriend gave herself up, but Olthoff jumped into the driver's seat and allegedly rammed the two vehicles driven by the deputies. He later escaped custody by fleeing on foot.

Olthoff was found and arrested the next day.

If convicted, he faces a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on each count.
