NEWPORT, Minn. (WCCO) – One suspect is in custody and a victim of an alleged kidnapping was turned over to police early Saturday morning in Newport, authorities said.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 200 block of 4th Avenue South in South St. Paul at about 4 p.m. Friday on a report of a woman being assaulted and held against her will. When authorities arrived, they learned that the woman was a 31-year-old female and had been a previous victim of domestic assault in St. Paul.
Officers identified the suspect as Samuel Jay McGown, 42, and began searching for him with the assistance of a SWAT team.
Authorities later traced McGown to a residence in Newport, where he was with the victim, and McGown was taken into custody. He is now in the Ramsey County Jail. The victim was turned over to South St. Paul Police, authorities said. Authorities said she has been released to family and is now safe.
South St. Paul Police and St. Paul Police were also called to assist at the scene. The incident is under investigation at this time.
