More Grocers Pull Sparboe Eggs From Shelves

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A number of grocery stores have pulled eggs from Sbarboe Farms off their shelves, in the wake of video showing purported animal cruelty.

The animal rights group Mercy for Animals released video from an undercover investigation into the Litchfield-based farm business.

The video showed some workers mistreating the chickens. Hens were also shown living in cramped cages.

Both McDonald’s and Target took quick action, refusing to buy any more eggs from Sparboe.

Now, Lunds and Byerly’s have also reportedly removed Sparboe eggs from store shelves and replaced them with Crystal Farms eggs.

Sparboe has said the behavior depicted in the video was unacceptable and inconsistent with their values.

“Sbarboe Farms ” A COMPANY guilty of cruelty? How can that be? My Republican friends tell me private and public companies are almost god-like in their concern for people, animals and the environment. Like 3M when they polluted half of St. Pauls drinking water…..

    • Realist

I’m a strict vegetarian anyhow..And my partner Donald is Vegan & would never touch an egg..We support the boycott of Sparboe eggs.

    • Blah Blah

Oh spare the politically motiviated rant. You’re brand of ignorance is what propagates stupidiy and the lack of valadation for liberal causes.

      • Ronald

Politics aside it is a fact and republicans do care about their environment. There is no lack of validation, it is fact that 3M was sued by the State of Minnesota for ground water contamination, politics aside nobody wants nasty water even Republicans like me. Sparbo farms has a long list of proven violations as a matter of court record. They will fix their mess and move on like most responsible businesses do.

      • J

That would be “your” brand of ignorance.

        • iseedumbpeople

          and “validation”

    • Joker

Funny how some Stupid A$$ always has to go for the political twist. Get a life…seriously.

  • what!?!

You know whats funny – is the video they(sparboe) put out towards the end when their ceo says ” our eggs will be sold”
Hmm – good luck with that!

    • Ron

crystal farms will buy them and repackage them and raise the price…JUst sayin

      • Swamp Rat

Sorry, Ronski, you are full of beans. Crystal Farms have their own facilities and they operate in legal mandatory compliance and outstanding sanitary compliance to all regs and laws. Why would they buy contaminated products? Think about it before you start libeling another company. Otherwise that will be a lot of legal ‘egg’ on your face! LOL!

        • NOT a vegan

Sorry Swamp Rat, but Ron is right. McDonald’s would have never dropped them. Do you realize how many threats McDonald’s gets a day from “animal rights” people? They only dropped them because the FDA got involved due to “other” reasons that were not specified on the news. Most egg facilities will operate just as Sparboe. Sparboe has NEVER been tested positive for salmonella. Not to mention this was a set up by Mercy For Animals.

        • Ron

sorry dude the eggs in question are not tainted nor are they unfit to eat. This is a politically correct reaction to something that people wish not to see…

          • Swamp Rat

Unfortunately unless the USDA and/or the FDA has okay’d Sparboe as being in compliance, fit, and sanitary for further egg production then I, as a consumer and news watcher, can only presume that recent egg production is still unfit for general consumption. Sparboe hasn’t issued any pertinent general news bulletins regarding there present situation or if they are now in compliance with USDA and FDA regs.

Too bad the news media hasn’t done much follow-up on this point. Note: Political Correctness should have no bearing on this Sparboe news story. Public health safety is more important than any PC input.

            • Litchlady

No-one ever said that the eggs were unfit, nor were they out of compliance with regulation. This is another case of the general public not understanding where there food comes from. Yes some of the behavior towards the chickens was out of line but for the most part what you see in the video is regular occurance for raising chickens for mass egg production. Do your own research before freaking out about everything you read in the news.

              • Swamp Rat

                @Litch Lady
As a former farmer’s kid and a former journalist, a previous career, I see where you are coming from. However, I have not freaked out and I have done my research! For example, why haven’t we heard that Mercy for Animals may have set-up Sparboe for national shame and ridicule? Why hasn’t the news media done a better job in getting all the facts? And, why hasn’t all these big business vendors of Sparboe done their own quality control inspections to ensure proper product supply and above board business practices? There’s a lot of questions and no answers.

The news media is getting down to the total facts of this story. If it can be put in an one minute sound bite or 140 character Tweet, who cares. Well, Litch Lady, I am not freaking out but I am concerned we, the public, don’t have all the facts. It’s old school JOUR(journalism)101–The 5-W’s–that needs to be practiced. Not doing so really ingratiates my old school journalism education and experiences. You should be demanding the facts to this story also!

                • Swamp Rat

                  @Litch Lady
“The news media is “NOT” getting down to the total facts of this story.”
Sorry for the typo. I miss my typewriter.

  • Realist

I love eggs…and chicken…and venison…beef…fish…seafood. Enjoy that tofu wrapped in lettuce your sprout eating MF’ers!

    • tom tom

Yeehaw!! We should be nice to the chickens before we steal their unborn young, crack open their shell, and pour the embryo into a hot skillet to make my delicious ham and cheese omelet!

  • James

I applied to work there and didn’t get hired. Apparently when I told them in the interview that I treat animals with respect that must have been strike 3! This was the first answer I gave! Haha!

  • Jude

So are they going to throw all these eggs away because chickens were being mistreated?? Ya, like that makes alot of sense. Couldn’t they have just sold those eggs and then cut ties with the company?

Do you all know that this was set up by Mercy For Animals. Read for yourself:
