Ex-Viking Joe Kapp Talks With WCCO About Cane Fight

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Former Vikings player Joe Kapp talked with WCCO 830 Radio about the fight that broke out between him and a Canadian football rival over the weekend.

"I'd like not to have to tell you, because I don't feel good about it. It was something that never should've happened," said Kapp. "Here we are, 100 years later. Everybody's starting to have a good time and this thing had to happen."

The fight happened on Friday at the Canadian Football League's alumni luncheon in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Former British Columbia Lions quarterback Kapp and former Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive lineman Angelo Mosca were both caught on camera swinging canes at each other.

Kapp told WCCO Radio host Dave Lee about their long-brewing rivalry, which extends all the way back to 1963, when, during the 1963 Grey Cup (Canada's version of the Super Bowl), Hamilton won the game. Kapp and the rest of the Lions were upset by what they considered a dirty hit made by Mosca.

"One of the reasons we lost the game was because this big old defensive tackle hit our great player after he was hit and was down and out of bounds," said Kapp. "I cussed him out in two languages: English and Spanish."

Kapp referred to Mosca as both a "bully" and a "dirty player."

"The good part of the story is that in 1964, we played them and won the game."

As for what exactly went down last weekend, Kapp said Mosca said something under his breath earlier that evening. Kapp claimed he tried to ignore him, but then they were both supposed to share a place on the podium later on. It wasn't long before the rivalry flared up again.

"On the table were some flowers, and so I took the flowers up and offered, when my name was called, them to him. Once again, he cussed at me," said Kapp. "I think he wanted some kind of conflict, some kind of publicity stunt."

Mosca has a new book out called "Tell It To My Face."

"I'm glad there's a record of how it looked," Kapp said, referring to the viral video of the fight. "All kinds of friends have called me from all over the world to tell me what a good shot it was."
