Vikings Release Veteran QB McNabb

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Vikings have released veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb.

Sources tell WCCO's Mike Max that McNabb was released Thursday. The speculation is that other teams with injured quarterbacks, like the Chicago Bears, may pick him up. The Vikings released him to give him a chance to play somewhere else.

McNabb has been sitting on the sidelines since October, when head coach Leslie Frazier benched him for rookie quarterback Christian Ponder. McNabb remained on the team as a backup but hasn't seen any playing time since.

At the time McNabb was benched, Frazier said, "the decision was made purely based on what would give us the best chance to win on Sunday. That's why the decision was made. I didn't feel or sense that staying status quo was going to get us a win on Sunday."
