Driver That Died After Crashing Into Lake Vadnais Identified

VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minn. (WCCO) — A 46-year-old man who police say was driving the wrong way before crashing into a swamp Sunday evening has died.

The crash happened just after 8 p.m. along Vadnais Boulevard and Rice Street.

According to authorities, the man, later identified as Michael A. Lange, of Vadnais Heights, became stuck in the vehicle and needed assistance getting out.

Deputy Todd Kramer, a member of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office water patrol unit, responded to the scene and quickly got into a wet suit. Kramer was able to open the driver’s door, felt a man inside in the driver’s seat, cut the seat belt and pulled the driver from the vehicle.

The Vadnais Heights Fire Department arrived on scene to help Kramer pull the man to safety.

First responders were able to restore a heartbeat from Lange and he was loaded into an ambulance for treatment.

Lange was then transported to Regions Hospital, where he died around 9:21 p.m.

The Minnesota State Patrol and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner continue to investigate the crash.

Vadnais Heights and Little Canada are awful @ salting the roads around the lake and everywhere else for that matter. Watch your driving on County Road D/Centerville Rd in LIttle Canada around the curves overlooking the highway and the hill on Centerville next to Little Canada Road. If they are icy, you can’t slow down or get up the hill after you’ve stopped at the light there. Plow and ice people really need to salt and sand there more. Its sad this happened to anyone.

  • Wrong Way

Everyone kept yelling… “you’re going the wrong way”. He was last heard screaming “how do you know where I’m going”?

I doubt road salt would have helped here. Always a good idea to slow down, if for no other reason but other people driving the wrong way.

Its your comment is meant to be funny, its not. Someone died here!

It is a good idea to slow down and pay attention to your surroundings, but making a joke about someone dying just isn’t cool!

It is a funny comment and a great movie.

I look at the comment from WRONG WAY and I don’t see that it was intended to be funny so CHILL OUT PFRED. They are just stating what was going on on at the time!

I think we need to make it harder to obtain a driver’s license at ALL locations. I’ve seen too many bad MN drivers, especially during the winter. Recently an individual cut in front of me without signaling, and the roads were icy. If you cannot drive properly, get off the road! If it looks too dangerous for you to drive in those conditions, then don’t risk your life and wait it out. It’s that simple!

  • PFred

There are WAY too many people who don’t think they need to use their signals in any weather. I encounter them constantly on 35E going to and from work each day. Idiots shouldn’t be on the roads! Once the weather gets bad, they still think they can drive fast and speed up to get ahead of anyone. They don’t realize, they aren’t always going to be in front. Slow down, use your signals, remember the rules from waaaay back when you got your license (if you actually have one)! If you can’t abide by the rules, stay off the roads! Its tragic this guy died like this and joking about it doesn’t help anyone, especially his family. Not saying he was drinking and driving, but this time of year, everyone thinks they can drive if they’ve had a few. TAKE A FREAKING CAB if you’ve been drinking or call your wife, your sister, your brother, your neighbor, or walk home, but DON’T get behind the wheel. Its not worth killing someone, ending up in jail or having to deal with all the issues you will end up dealing with if you get pulled over or kill someone.

The Strib headline read “Man Drives Truck Into Pond” like it was all casual.

  • Shelley Rasset

He’s my cousin if you don’t have anything good to say ,shut up now !!!

For those of you who don’t know, the road leading down to the pond and lake is a curved slope that gets VERY slippery in the winter, regardless of salting! The lake puts off ice! I go to school on this road, therefore, I have to drive this curve everyday. I lost control once on the ice. It is VERY scary, and I can see how one could lose control and go into the lake or pond. It is not a difficult feat. A man died here, let’s not speculate about how, rather, let’s mourn the loss of a life.

im so sorry shelly my prayers are with your family live rite by the lake know how sslippery it is in the winter i say get some guard rails around that lake

  • Kelly Lange

Mike is my husband and the father of our beautiful daughter. That road is very dangerous, especially now that it was changed to add that curve coming down the hill. Regardless of what happened Sunday night – he was an awesome, God fearing man who loved deeply and completely all the people in his life. All of us in his large family are saddened beyond belief. Please pray for us as we struggle to try and get through this awful tragedy. Thank you.

We’re talking about my dad here. I personally find a couple of these comments to be extremely disrespectful to my mother and I. Hey genuis- Wrong Way- YOU WERNT THERE. and your little comment is from a movie. This made my mom cry for hours that someone who wasnt at the accident scene would say something so rude. MY DAD.. CANNOT have anything bad said about him because he was an AMAZING person and father. So the “funny” quotes for a movie need to stop. SO KNOCK IT OFF. Thanks. R.I.P. DAD.
