Penumbra Cancels 2 Shows, Cuts Budget

ST. PAUL (WCCO) -- The Penumbra Theatre in St. Paul announced they are cancelling two productions scheduled for next spring due to budget cuts.

The shows "Julius By Design," which was to run from Feb. 9 through March 4, and "Bourbon at the Border," which was scheduled for March 29 through April 22, are both being canceled.

"These cancellations are painful for all of us," said the theater's board chair Bill Stevens. "Not only is it disappointing and frustrating, but it strains our relationships –- and for that we apologize."

The theater announced they intend to cut $600,000 from the current budget.

"This last year taught us some tough and valuable lessons on the vagaries of this economy and its impact on our business," said Stevens.

Theatergoers who currently hold tickets to these two productions can either be refunded or, if they wish, offer the cost of their tickets as a donation. Refunds are available by contacting the box office at 651-224-3180.

Two other productions still remain on the 2011-2012 season schedule. A return engagement of "I Wish You Love" will run through Dec. 18, and the season's final show, "The Amen Corner," will open on May 11 and run through June 17.
