Besides Dedication, What You Need For Winter Running

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- This time of year can be difficult to find the motivation and the right conditions outside to stay active. But going out for a jog doesn't have to be uncomfortable when it's cold.

Besides dedication, WCCO looked at some ways to make running in the cold easier.

If you run during the winter months you may experience a pain in your chest. Experts said that happens because the air we're breathing is cold and dry forcing our lungs to work harder.

It will help to spend a little time outside first before you start huffing and puffing. Kim Eskuri, a manager at The Running Store, said to do your best to warm up before heading out.

"Maybe starting out slower, or doing a run on the treadmill or something inside and then to a stretch, and then go outside," she said.

Having the right equipment will also help.

"Now you're dealing with the cold and darkness and the ice, and you need to change your gear," said Eskuri.

When the trail is slick, there are products for more traction, some with small metal spikes.

"This goes on just like this: over the toe, and then comes back over the heel, really simple," said Eskuri showing off a shoe cover that helps provide stability. "When that black ice comes up in the winter, I'm not going to biff it or fall."

There is also a balancing act to trying to stay warm, but not too warm.

Experts suggest dressing in layers of warm breathable fabric, wearing a hat and using mitts that can be used as a glove as well.

Eskuri said avoiding cotton will help too.

"Think of it like a towel -- it just absorbs moisture," she said. "So when you stop at a stoplight, you're going to freeze automatically."

Another thing to keep in mind is that it gets dark early this time of year, so make sure you wear enough reflective material. You could also get a running light so drivers know where you are.
