DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (WCCO) – A man who was apparently trying to reach for his cell phone accidentally shot himself in the leg Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, 71-year-old Thomas Murphy, of Sebeka, Minn., was with a friend in the Carsonville Township when his phone rang.
Police said they believe Murphy’s jacket may have gotten hooked on his .22-caliber handgun while he was reaching for the phone.
The gun discharged, and he was struck in his left leg.
Authorities said he was driven to St. Joseph’s Hospital and then transported to Essential-St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes.
The sheriff’s office said they are continuing to investigate the incident.
