Police: Man Points Gun At 12-Year-Old In Road Rage

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A man and his 12-year-old daughter found themselves looking down the barrel of a handgun Tuesday afternoon as they passed a man on Highway 169, Brooklyn Park police said.

The road rage occurred around 12:30 p.m., when 41-year-old Royal Toney slammed the brakes on his white Volvo on northbound Highway 169. Toney then pulled out a handgun and pointed it at a car that had accelerated to pass him. That car contained a man and his 12-year-old daughter, police said.

The victim called police and attempted to follow Toney. But Toney sped off at speeds around 90 mph, police said.

Toney attempted to exit the highway at 85th Avenue, but he hit a traffic sign. Toney then swerved back onto the highway and pulled over. Police found him there shortly after, a criminal complaint said.

Toney told police he had a CalTech .40-caliber handgun in his car. Police said they found the gun loaded in Toney's center console. Toney did not have a permit to carry the gun in Minnesota, police said.

Toney has been charged with two counts of second-degree assault. If convicted, Toney faces a maximum of 7 years in prison and/or $28,000 in fines.
