1 Dead In Crash, Northbound I-35 Closed Near Elko

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- One person is dead and two others are injured after a crash on northbound Interstate 35 near Elko-New Market.

The northbound lanes of I-35 are currently closed.

The Minnesota State Patrol say a vehicle was driving southbound on I-35 in the right lane when another vehicle merged in front of it and then started merging into the right lane. The first vehicle then went to the shoulder, over-corrected and went through the median. The vehicle was then struck by another vehicle in the northbound lane.

According to police, of the two people injured, one was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital. The other was transported by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center.

The driver of the northbound vehicle, identified as a 34-year-old resident of New Market, Minn., is in critical condition.

Traffic is being diverted onto County Road 2.
