ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – The woman who escaped last week’s apartment fire that killed three people in Mora remains in fair condition.

Carole Welsch was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul after last Thursday’s fire. Welsch is in the hospital’s burn center.

In a statement released Wednesday by Regions, Welsch’s family members say they are thankful she was able to escape the apartment building. They say it was a “miracle” that she was able to get out.

A 48-year-old man, his 12-year-old son and a 68-year-old woman died in the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the Minnesota Fire Marshal’s office says it appears to be accidental.

Investigators say only one smoke detector in the four-plex may have been working.
