Minn. Man Rescued After Falling Through Lake Ice

PELICAN RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) — A Rothsay man is recovering after falling through the ice and getting stranded in the fog on a lake in northwestern Minnesota.

Forty-two-year-old Al Dunbar had left his fish house on Crystal Lake near Pelican Rapids Wednesday evening when he drove his four-wheeler into open water on the lake trying to find the shoreline.

KFGO-AM reports Dunbar managed to crawl out of the water before the ATV went under. His cell phone still worked, so Dunbar called 911.

Pelican Rapids Fire Chief Trevor Steeves says it took three firefighters wearing special submersible suits carrying a flat-bottomed boat across the lake to find Dunbar.

Dunbar was found an hour-and-half after plunging into the icy water. He told his rescuers, “I’m sure glad you’re here.”

Dunbar was treated for hypothermia and released.

Yes I agree. Come on people! The ice isn’t NEARLY close enough to walk on! Sheesh Notice his last name tho….Dunbar? hmm

    • insignificant

c’mon…1st ice is a great time to get out there, checkin’ the ice as you go out, though,eh?…only reason he went through is cause he got lost into open water…

      • So

he went out on the ice even though he couldn’t tell where the open water was?

        That doesn’t sound very smart.

Stupid is ,stupid does. Does he know how warm it has been?? And what ice?? Maybe around the edges but I bet it is paper thin a couple feet out. Glade he is ok but maybe should get his marbles checked. Stay off the ice. suppose to be near 50 again this weekend.
