DEERWOOD TOWNSHIP, Minn. (WCCO) — Authorities said a Brainerd man is dead after rolling his ATV while trying to drive down a steep embankment.

The accident happened Monday afternoon in a remote area of Deerwood Township, according to the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the ATV, Craig Rye, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said Craig Rye and his passenger, 21-year-old Erik Rye, were injured when the ATV rolled onto them while driving down an embankment. People riding with the victims were able to call 911 but weren’t able to give authorities an exact location.

Using their cell phone location, the Crow Wing county Sheriff’s Office were able to determine the riders’ general location.

When rescue crews arrived at the scene, Craig Rye was pronounced dead. Eric Rye was injured and transported from the scene by ATV.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the accident.
