5 Weeks Later, Girls Still Sleeping Outside For Charity

SHOREWOOD, Minn. (WCCO) -- Some kids with warm hearts and a very cold box are about to reach their goal. WCCO first visited Debra, Danielle and Savanah five weeks ago.

They're the kids who are sleeping in a cardboard box on their family's deck every night in order to raise money for the homeless. They started out trying to raise $100 but soon changed their goal to be sleeping outside until Christmas Eve.

WCCO checked back in with them on Wednesday to see their progress. They've gotten a new box with some extra blankets and tarps on top, and even furnished it with a thermometer.

Both older girls have lost teeth since they started the project, so the tooth fairy visited the box and left money for the kids, and for charity.

Their last night will be Friday, so they can sleep in their own, warm beds on Christmas Eve.

They admit it's gotten cold out there, but they never considered quitting early.

"Because we want to help as many people as we can," said Debra Sewald. "So the longer we go, the more people we can help."

"As much as I support what they're doing and love what they're doing, I'm ready for them to come in," said Carrie Sewald-Hester, Debra's mother. "The dad and I can sleep again too. We've been sleeping in shifts to watch over them, so it'll be nice when they come in."
