2 Rescued After ATV Goes Through Ice

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police said a couple of ATV riders that went through the ice serve as a reminder that lake ice is still thin in many areas.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office said they were called just before 5:30 p.m. Monday on a report that an ATV went through the ice on Upper Whitefish Lake in Ideal Township, Minn.

Two men were rescued about 150 yards from the shoreline and were treated by an ambulance on the scene. They didn't need to go to the hospital and were able to drive away in their vehicle.

Crow Wing County Todd Dahl said he wants to remind the public that if you are traveling on ice at night you should take extra precaution.

He suggests if you do need to go out, to tell someone when you expect to be home, wear appropriate winter gear and carry a cell phone on you at all times.

Because this winter has been warmer than usual, ice conditions can vary. It is important to check ahead to see if the lake you plan on ice fishing, ATVing or snowmobiling on is safe.
