Warm Weather, Winds Sink Fish Houses In Grant County

ELBOW LAKE, Minn. (WCCO) -- Warm weather and strong winds on Monday are to blame for several fish houses falling through the ice in Grant County.

According to the sheriff's office, several fish houses had fallen through on Pelican, Barrett and Lightning lakes in Grant County.

They said the warm conditions created a lot of water sitting on the ice. Mixing that with the strong winds, the water was pushed under the fish houses which melted away the ice underneath them.

The sheriff's office said the fish houses were all unoccupied at the time they fell through.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office said anyone who still has a fish house out on area lakes should think about removing them until the ice is stronger.

They also caution people from going on the ice because there is still open water. Grant County is located in west-central Minnesota.
