Former Gopher Celebrates Kwanzaa With Basketball Camp

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Some local kids are getting a lesson on and off the basketball court.

The kids are taking part in the Clyde Turner Educational Basketball camp at Farview Park in north Minneapolis.

Turner played for the Gophers in the early 70s. He's' not only helping the children improve their basketball skills. When they get off the court, they're also getting a lesson on Kwanzaa.

The African American holiday was created in 1966 to reaffirm the values of African culture.

"We're having a Kwanzaa camp and trying to learn all the principles so we can apply them in life as well as on the court," said youth camper Osirus Washington.

"It benefits them all the way around as well as their families," said Turner. "We've had some incidents that have gone on this week in Minneapolis, and this is something positive that's happened. That's really good for the community."

Turner's educational basketball camp was started 30 years ago. More than 10,000 boys and girls have taken part.
